When Prayer Feels Like an Empty Room

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles in after a loss. You sit down to pray, or you try to, and the words seem to go nowhere. The room feels emptier than it used to, and somehow God does too.

If you've been there, you may have started to wonder what that distance means. A thought can creep in late at night: if God really loved me, surely I would feel him close right now. Some days it shows up as a flat, numb feeling when other people talk about God's comfort. You might hear a hopeful song or scroll past an encouraging post and feel nothing at all, then quietly worry that the nothing is a verdict on you.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
Psalm 34:18 · BSB

Feeling far from God in your grief does not mean he has stepped away from you. Grief dulls almost everything, including our sense of God, and that numbness is part of being human. This verse was written for the very place you are standing, with no condition that you feel anything first.

His nearness doesn't rise and fall with your emotions. On the days you can't reach for him, he is still holding on to you, and you don't need the right words or the right feeling for that to be true.

Try this today

  1. If it helps, take one slow breath and simply say the name of the person or thing you've lost to God, with no other words needed.
  2. You might rest a hand on your chest for a moment and let that stand in for a prayer you can't find words for.

Sit with this

What would change if the distance you feel weren't a sign of how God feels about you?

God, I don't feel you right now, and I'm tired of pretending that I do. Please stay close to me in this grief, even when I can't sense you there. Hold on to me when I don't have the strength to hold on to you.

Grief takes its own time, and he is in no hurry to leave.
